Job description

We are seeking an experienced Data Team Lead to lead and develop our client’s database and data engineering capability. This role combines hands-on technical expertise with team leadership and project delivery responsibility.

The successful candidate will manage a team of SQL and database professionals, ensuring the delivery of high-quality data solutions, database performance, reliability, and project outcomes that support business objectives.

Job requirements

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the SQL/Database team.

  • Manage workload allocation, priorities, and team performance.

  • Act as the technical escalation point for database-related issues.

  • Design, develop, and optimise SQL queries, stored procedures, and database solutions.

  • Ensure database performance, integrity, security, and availability.

  • Drive best practice in database development, administration, and governance.

  • Partner with business stakeholders to gather requirements and deliver solutions.

  • Manage project plans, delivery timelines, risks, and dependencies.

  • Coordinate resources to ensure successful project delivery.

  • Produce and maintain technical documentation and standards.

  • Identify opportunities for automation, optimisation, and process improvement.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong SQL Server experience and advanced SQL knowledge.

  • Strong database administration and database design knowledge.

  • Proven experience leading or mentoring technical teams.

  • Experience managing multiple projects and delivery timelines.

  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.

  • Experience with database performance tuning and optimisation.

  • Understanding of backup, recovery, security, and data governance principles.

  • Experience within Retail Banking or Financial Services preferred.
